Stereochrist-Dead River Blues CD
Arctic Music / Punktuation Records

Wow, this little gem had some trouble finding me. I saw a review for Stereochrist online about two months ago, and decided that it was something I had to review myself, so I e-mailed the band. I got an e-mail back shortly saying that they'd be more than happy to send me a copy. I waited, and it turns out that the band was having some internal problems; the vocalist and drummer left to start a new band. This meant I'd have to wait a little longer for "Dead River Blues" to get to me, so in the meantime, I convinced a friend of mine to buy a copy, which really just wetted my appetite for more. Finally, I got a package in the mail, tore it open, found the nearest CD player and let it loose. The first triumphant riff kicked in, and…it started skipping. Upon closer examination of the CD, I noticed a nice size crack running through it. I looked at the package the CD came in, and noticed it appeared to be pretty beaten up. Also, the cardboard slipcase the CD came in was bent. Thank you US Postal service. I remembered that I had convinced my friend to buy a copy, and borrowed it from him. Finally, I can listen to the whole album again, and now I'm hooked. "Dead River Blues" is just what the title suggests, rock and roll in the "stoner" vein, groovy as hell with riffage galore. Think of a more upbeat Down, with nods to Orange Goblin, Corrosion of Conformity, or even Trouble. It's a damn shame that they lost Peter Felfoldi on vocals, because he's got a real unique voice. Word from the website is that the band found a new vocalist (David Makó), now all they need is another drummer. If the new lineup can put out another album as strong as this one, they'll be a force to be reckoned with for sure. I can see this album becoming quite a classic in my CD collection, if I ever happen to track down another copy.
