| Stereochrist - Dead River Blues (2004 - Arctic Music Group/Punktuation Records) In the middle of a pile of death and black metal promos, I find Stereochrist. One of these things is not like the others. I rather like when I have trouble classifying a band. But if I had to make a stab I would say these guys are a hybrid species of doom/stoner metal and something a bit perkier. They belong somewhere in the Monster Magnet galaxy I think. Doom really isn't an accurate label, because this music is not slow and plodding. Neither would it be called fast. Hell if I know. All I know is it is pretty cool. It has a nice groove to it; I find myself rocking back and forth in my chair as I listen to it. It is chock full of cool guitar riffs. The production is good, but it would sound even better on a big budget. The vocals are cool. I wasn't sure at first if I liked them, but I do. He sings clean with an occasional growl. It is really quite catchy. Because I've never heard of this label before (or this band for that matter) I'm concerned that this will be the first and last I ever hear of Stereochrist. That would be a shame. I don't know if they have anymore releases, but I think if they can get themselves on a bigger label, write a new batch of songs, and get a slick production, I think these guys could go somewhere. It would be cool if Nuclear Blast or someone picked them up. Whoa. I just read that they are from
Hungary. I never would have guessed that, they sound very American. Check
'em out.
