This is the first sampler of the doom metal and stoner label based in the UK. The man behind this label is Sam Carter, who used to play in Cambian Dawn and is now active in Silent Movie (former Electric Mountain). His idea was to give an overview of the current doom metal scene. The first track of this album is from his ex-band Cambian Dawn. The song “Hands Of Doom” is a traditional doom song with heavy guitar riffs and nice melodies. Next one is from Officium Triste. These Dutch guys re-recorded “Mountains Of Depressiveness”, which was released in 1996 as a 7” on Weeping Willow Records. “Behind The Mask” is from Ataraxie, which is a mixture of death and doom with some black metal sounds. Nice song with a lot of variety. The Eternal from Australia just released an album via Firebox and “Down” is a track from that album. It reminds me a bit of the later Paradise Lost this song, but much, much heavier. The sound is great and it’s very melodic. An example of sludge comes from
Stereochrist. This is my first acquaintance with this band and it’s definitely a nice one. “Smack the Sun” contains heavy guitars, nice tempo and great vocals, thus enough ingredients to create an awesome song. Up next is The River, for me one of the most promising bands at the moment. Very slow music with female vocals, who could expect such a good combination. The most extreme act on this sampler is Moss. Everyone who checked this band out recently knows their music and it’s definitely something you like or not. But one thing it’s for sure, it’s damn heavy. Another promising band is Lahar from Holland. Again traditional doom in the vein of Saint Vitus with raw vocals. Despond was for me a surprise, because I never checked it out. Mournful, melodic doom created by just one man. Great stuff! Last, but not least is Sam Carter’s new band Silent Movie. This band ends this sampler with the instrumental song Doom Odyssey. I think that Sam succeeded in giving an overview of the doom scene, although it’s very hard nowadays. If you want to check it out, contact the label at www.slowmomusic.com. The sampler is limited at 500 pieces by the way.
